I am a research professor at the
Department of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology at the Museo Nacional de
Ciencias Naturales (Spain). My current research interests are focused on
macroecology, the biogeographical ecology of the avifauna of the South-western
Palaearctic and on the study of habitat selection in birds for modelling
patterns of species abundance/occurrence. In this research program the specific
research goals are:
* To analyze patterns of across-species variation in population
trends in a scenario of climate warming and landscape changes, and to explore
the relationship between the observed interspecific variation and species
traits, such as habitat preferences, niche breadth or distribution patterns. We
will combine spatial information with temporal one, by monitoring changes in
communities over a quarter of century in northern Spain. This approach will
allow us to test the different influence of climate warming, and of
anthropogenic habitat and landscape shifts, in the observed variation of
population density of species.
* To study the interaction between environmental food availability
and the thermal state of the environment as determinants of the distribution,
abundance and body condition of birds wintering in the Iberian peninsula.
* To propose a conceptual model to assess the risk of biodiversity
loss at the taxa level in islands, based on a set of easily measurable
biological patterns defining rarity and the loss of genetic diversity, thus
taking into account both the risk of extinction and the singularity of taxa.
* To explore the determinants of geographical range and population
density of terrestrial animal species, accounting for ecological components
while controlling for phylogenetic effects.
Mis intereses científicos se han centrado en el estudio de la distribución, abundancia, selección de hábitat y acceso a los recursos tróficos de los vertebrados terrestres (más detalles). Aunque esta actividad ha tenido una componente eminentemente 'básica', también ha desarrollado una vocación 'orientada' a la conservación de la biodiversidad animal y al análisis de los impactos humanos sobre ella. En relación con las disciplinas anteriormente citadas, también he dedicado una considerable parte de mi tiempo a la formación académica especializada (método científico y herramientas estadísticas) y a la divulgación científica.
